Serena Williams powers through in Australian Open as Venus bows out
The American was back in form on Wednesday to take on the challenge of Nina Stojanovic. He won 6-3 and 6-0 in consecutive sets as Williams continued his hunt for a record 24th Grand Slam.
Williams' first-round match lasted less than an hour on Monday, but Stojanovic held out more, especially in the opening set where the American was asked to dig deep.
However, Williams used his wealth of experience to catch up and didn't lose a game after winning 5-3 in the first set.
"He pushed me really hard and I think he honestly played really well throughout the game so I really have to fight for all the games," said 39-year-old Williams.
"The second I didn't think as much as the first; I just allowed myself to see what happened."
Venus refuses to give up
Williams, once again wearing a one-legged leotard inspired by the famous American athlete Florence Griffith-Joyne, will face Russian Anastasia Potapova, an opponent who was easily sent off to Melbourne last year, in the next round.
"I'm going to go home and get ready and do my best," added Serena, who has only missed five matches at this year's tournament.
"We're all here to have fun and I'm happy to be here and it's great to be able to play in front of the crowd again. So, every day is fun."
Wednesday was not a particularly good day for Serena's sister Venus, who bowled generously at the Australian Open.
The 40-year-old needed medical attention after injuring his ankle during a start against Italian Sara Erani, but the veteran refused to give up.
Many may have retired, but the seven-time Grand Slam champion struggled despite clearly struggling to run and ended up losing the matches 6-1 and 6-0.
